East is East - Research

Enoch Powell Research

Enoch Powell was a politician who made a very famous speech on the 20th of April 1968 about the immigration policy and how if it wasn't monitored that the coloured people would 'hold the whip' over the white people. He recounted how a white woman was abused because she did not want to rent the house to coloured people. His view was, if the the blacks and browns arent controlled, they will eventually take over and overpower the white british. Shortly after his speech, Enoch was expelled from his position as shadow defence secretary after members of his party threatened to leave.
This links to East is East because it is set in a similar time which means that at the time there were racial insecurities between people.
the culture: The culture of the country at the time was changing. In certain area's, the asian people began to gather and in these areas, there would be all the things that you require if youre asian, such as the food, the cinema etc.

Good research into Enoch Powell - Can you say what his views were on a multi-cultural society?
Your explanation of why this figure is relevant to 'EIE' is very simplistic. Develop this further
You are missing further research into this period, the culture, these characters, 'black suits'

Abdul through the play is one of the characters who's opinions change the most.
He is 23 years old. He is the oldest of the children. He gives up on his own interests to try and advance the well being of his own family. He is shy and obedient and wants harmony for the family. Abdul is a family person, he gets on with Sajit and talks to him without being rude to him *act 2 scene 2*
Abdul actually wants his father to accept him
Act 2 scene 4 is his first real 'act of defiance'. he gets drunk and realises that hes a laughing stock, he even considers getting married if it'll help the rest of the family. in the end, he doesn't actually hit his dad, just holds him, then, while everyone is jumping to conclusions about Ella and George and their relationship, he is the one who is being reasonable and sees sense.

Appropriate costume
For my George monologue I wore:
A White muslim hat because George is religious, but is also trying to fit into the british culture.
i put on a brown shirt and a brown sweater vest because brown is a very boring and typical asian old person colour.
